The "Guillermo Velarde" Nuclear Fusion Institute (GV-NFI) is a University Research Institute belonging to the UPM with attached sections in the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) and the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). Created to carry out research of excellence in the field of nuclear fusion and fission.
Its main work area is inertial confinement nuclear fusion, where the GV-NFI is unique in Spain. The research focuses on the physics of matter at very high energy density, materials under extreme conditions, physics associated with large-scale power generation technology, neutron transport and uses of radiation sources. As well as, the nuclear fuel cycle and advanced nuclear fission. It also advises on defense, nuclear non-proliferation and security.
