The UPM experience of over 25 years in China, with its director for Asia permanently established in Shanghai since 2012, made possible the creation of this business incubator aimed at young entrepreneurs, who wish to obtain a global vision of business as well as learn the possibilities of emerging markets, taking advantage of the experience from the Sino-Hispanic Campus at Tongji University founded by the UPM.
Within the Shanghai´s innovation ecosystem offer, UPM opportunities were identified with its dynamism and rapid growth of new companies, with a wide offer of entrepreneurship events and activities in English, which provide networking opportunities with relevant actors in the startup’s environment.
In this sense, the creation of the program offers unique training in key areas such as ideation, validation of ideas, Chinese business culture, leadership, legal aspects, intellectual property, the Chinese market and its regulation or global expansion, among others. The program has been developed in an accelerated manner in five months with mentors and events that allow the business idea to evolve and move rapidly towards the commercialization of the product or service, whether in China, other emerging markets or in Spain but always with a global approach.
The incubator focuses on the technology sector, covering a wide range of innovation areas, with special emphasis on green technologies (Greentech). China has emerged as the world’s largest investor in the clean energy sector, investing more than 130 billion in renewable energy just in 2020, and with plans to put more than one million hydrogen vehicles on its roads by 2035. The Yangtze Delta region has stood out as a strategic point for the development of technologies such as solar, wind and green hydrogen.
The startups which have supported the Xiji Incubator cover diverse sectors such as urban mobility, agriculture technology and sustainable fashion. Remarkable examples include MOVO, a platform which offers urban transportation with scooters and electric bicycles extending its fleet in Spain and seven countries of South America until been acquired by Cabify and Fluviq developing solutions of artificial intelligence and technology IoT aimed at efficient water management, reducing its use and raising the agricultural productivity.
The UPM promotes this entrepreneurial experience among its students through the mobility scholarship program for Asia, with 10 annual internships for the Xiji incubation program. Starting next year, it will also incorporate entrepreneurs from other leading universities in engineering and architecture, such as the UPC and the Universidad de Sevilla, partners in the Sino-Hispanic Campus. Likewise, the program is open to other entrepreneurship support entities, both national and international.
Thanks to the support of the Embajada de España in China, and the Consulate and Economic and Commercial Office (ICEX) in Shanghai, Xiji has strengthened its position as a reference incubator for Spanish-speaking startups in China. This position has been consolidated with the President of Spain’ official trip to Xiji in September 2024 to meet Spanish entrepreneurs who were developing their business in China.
