UPM participates in the Horizon Europe RAINS project to evaluate irrigation efficiency practices in Europe

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid is participating in the European RAINS project (Resilient Agricultural IrrigatioN systems), which aims over the next four years to contribute to improving the resilience of EU agriculture to water scarcity by demonstrating ten practical solutions, technologies, and irrigation tools.

The role of UPM in the project is to assess the efficiency of irrigation practices developed within the framework of the initiative. This challenge is led by a team headed by Luis Lassaletta, a researcher at CEIGRAM-UPM (Center for Research and Study on Agricultural and Environmental Risk Management at UPM). Their key contribution will focus on the specialization of nitrogen flows in the study regions, including Spain and Greece. This work spans scaling from crops to agri-food systems and from farm-level operations to territorial management.

The RAINS project is funded under the Horizon HE framework and is aligned with the objectives of Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment, which seeks to generate knowledge and innovative solutions to accelerate the transition toward sustainable resource management.

¡Congratulations to Lassaletta's team for their important work!
