UPM, technological leader in the European project SHIELD for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes

Under the co-direction of professors Víctor Maojo and Raúl Alonso Calvo, and coordinated by HI IBERIA, the SHIELD (Strategic Health Initiatives for Effective Disease Prevention) project aims to develop personalised prevention and treatment plans, integrating clinical data from three European hospitals and using advanced generative AI techniques, such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and intelligent agents.

Funded by the European Commission with a budget of €6.5 million, SHIELD (2024-2028) will be validated in three pilot projects involving more than 2,300 participants over two years. The aim is to evaluate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of this prevention strategy and to propose new primary prevention pathways that can have a real impact on the whole population.

This initiative is part of Pillar 2 ‘Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness’ of the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, which seeks to promote through clusters of research and innovation activities the adoption of innovative solutions in European industry and society to face identified challenges.

Congratulations to the Biomedical Informatics Group of the School of Computer Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Madrid for this great achievement and its valuable contribution to the advancement of personalised medicine!
