Recently, the increase in the usage of consumer drones due to their low cost and simple use has posed new security threats. For this reason, new surveillance systems should be developed against their malicious or negligent use. With the aim of detecting and classifying these targets, this paper suggests a passive radar sensor network based on the use of the downlink signal of the LTE communication system as the illumination of opportunity. Each sensor node is implemented by using a two-channel software-defined radio to obtain the reference and surveillance signals. The signal processing is based on the range-Doppler cross-correlation between the reconstructed reference signal and the surveillance signal, after a direct-signal interference and multipath cancellation process that removes the echoes due to static clutter. The centralized data processing fuses the detections through a multilateration algorithm and tracks the targets. In this way, this sensor network can be deployed in urban environments to detect and classify drones. | |
