Landfilling of Construction and Demolition (C&D) gypsum waste is synonym of H2S and CH4 generation, landscape degradation and natural resources depletion. Despite the fact that gypsum is 100% recyclable, recycling systems in Europe are only operating in France, Benelux, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. In the framework of the Life+ GtoG project: ?From Production to Recycling, a Circular Economy for the European Gypsum Industry with the Demolition and Recycling Industry?, a number of waste management recommendations to minimize the environmental impacts associated to the End-of-Life (EoL) of gypsum plasterboard are formulated. Starting with the on-site dismantling of gypsum systems, subsequent transport of the gypsum waste to the recycler and ending with the recycled gypsum reincorporation at the plasterboard production plant. These recommendations are based on a set of 37 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), refined after their evaluation and validation in 29 Best Practice Indicators (BPIs) capable to recognize and encourage best practices through the value chain. Results show that the quality of gypsum waste is highly dependent on how deconstruction companies deal with plasterboard waste onsite. On the other hand, the quality of the post-consumer recycled gypsum is important in order to make possible its reincorporation in the plasterboard manufacturing process. | |
