Plasterboard (PB) waste recycling requires a strong collaboration between the stakeholders involved in the product value chain: from waste generated in construction or demolition works, its transportation to transfer stations or recycling facilities, to the reincorporation of recycled gypsum in the manufacturing process of the new products. Throughout the management of PB waste generated in construction works, two major stages can be distinguished: onsite works and waste processing. This paper focuses on the analysis of onsite practices in new construction works with the aim of identifying the activities that influence the amount and quality of PB waste generated that is being segregated from the rest of fractions, and therefore increasing its recycling potential. Onsite visits, personal interviews, and surveys targeting the stakeholders involved in construction works have been conducted in a Spanish pilot project where PB waste has been segregated at source and transported, for its processing and reincorporation, to a PB manufacturing facility. From the results obtained, seven critical activities related to the correct onsite management of PB waste have been identified and described. | |
