This work describes the development and installation of a remotely controlled continuous vibration monitoring system on an as-built singular stress-ribbon footbridge in Valladolid (Spain). The singularity of the structure, the necessity of not modifying the structure in any way and the economic restriction made us design low-cost MEMS-based accelerometers installed (including cabling) inside the handrail. The monitoring system was validated by comparing the response measured by the MEMS accelerometers with conventional piezoelectric accelerometers. These tests demonstrated that these sensors are a competitive alternative to traditional ones and that the system is ready to be used for the dynamic analysis of the structure and to integrate a continuous structural health assessment | |
